My name is Bethany and I am a third year Computer Science student. My main interests in the subject area are applying computer science to health, physical and mental. During my year in industry I won a hackathon with the NHS and IBM with the idea of creating a system that will use artificial intelligence to take the doctors notes to tailor resources to mental health patients. This is where I started thinking about my dissertation idea.

Wouldn’t it be great if you could predict when someone will have a low mood, or when they’d be happy? For my dissertation I am researching and creating a method to test if it is possible to predict someones mood on a certain weekday. I am doing this by using sentiment analysis on diaries to test if any forecasting method can accurately predict future mood. To make it more accurate I am using other factors such as diary length and sentence structure.

So far I have created an algorithm that will predict extremely low mood on a weekday from historical diary data. Next step is applying this to a wider use of applications.
